It looks like there is no slowing down for the solar industry anytime soon, especially in California.

Effective January 1, 2020, the California Building Standards Commission will require solar installations on new single-family homes as well as multi-family buildings up to three stories. This mandate will make California the first state with this solar requirement.

No doubt this solar mandate will add thousands of dollars to the cost of new homes, averaging about $9,500. On the other hand, adding solar panels to homes is projected to offset this additional cost on the average of $19,000 over a 30-year energy savings.

Under the new law, builders must comply and are given have two options: incorporate solar panels onto new homes or build a shared solar installation so a community of homes can share from that system.

Currently, the California Building Industry Association estimates only about 15% – 20% of its single-family homes are equipped with solar panel installations. This new solar law aims to increase energy efficiency of the new homes to be built in 2020 and thereafter. And no doubt it will make California more reliant on cleaner, alternative energy while making an attempt at reducing our carbon footprint.

The new law will be a boon to the solar industry so don’t wait until 2020 struggling to get your solar business under control. The time to act is NOW!
