Lancaster, CA

Being California based, we can’t help but get excited with California being in the news for something related to solar. It isn’t that rare either, given the fact that California is the largest solar state in the U.S.

What can we say, we do love our sunshine.

Back in 2014, Lancaster, a small town a few hours north of our Los Angeles office made headlines when they began requiring all new buildings and homes to be built ready to add solar panels. Obviously, we thought this was a great idea at the time because anytime there is going to be more solar, we see the benefit.

Apparently, other cities got excited and inspired by this as well. Following this initial adoption, several other major cities adopted the same policy. A couple of those cities include Santa Monica and San Francisco. Clearly, Lancaster was on to something.

Now, they have just announced an expansion to this ordinance. In this new expansion, the solar panels will have to generate enough power in order to meet the needs of the home and those living within it. If there is not enough power generated through the array to meet those needs, the contractor is required to pay a hefty fine.

“The Zero Net Energy Home Ordinance expands upon Lancaster’s residential solar ordinance so that new homes built in Lancaster now will not only be environmentally friendly, but have a zero net impact on our environment, while reducing energy costs for the homeowners,” said Mayor R. Rex Parris in a statement. “This is a great stride in Lancaster’s journey to become a Zero Net City.”

This means there will be even more jobs in the solar industry as this policy expands. We cannot wait to see how much more solar this adds to the California equation.
