The idea of using technology to improve business is not a new one. The industrial revolution perhaps showed this best with the absolutely insane amount of manufacturing that was able to ramp up simply due to the use of technology. Software can accomplish the same effect in modern times.
Yet, many companies still utilize antiquated means to accomplish logistical challenges. When working with solar companies to develop Janus, we saw a lot of project managers using inefficient methods. Some were using fax machines and post-it notes in an attempt to keep track of their installers, a method that wasted time and just plain didn’t work well.
When we inquired as to the reason for these methods as opposed to current project management software, we got variations of two responses. The first was that the project management software currently on the market didn’t mesh well with the solar industry. The second, and most telling, was that the current options were too complicated.
This shows a fundamental flaw in other logistics software. If the entire purpose is to make workflow easier, then the software itself should be easy to use. This is further compounded when contractors are utilizing software that project managers also use as they each have very different skillsets and experience with software.
When we began to write the first lines of code that became Janus, we made “easy to use” a mantra. Throughout the entire development process, we kept returning to this mandate that the software has to be easy to use.
