One of our favorite quotes about logistics comes from Tom Peters, “Leaders win through logistics. Vision, sure. Strategy, yes. But when you go to war, you need to have both toilet paper and bullets at the right place at the right time. In other words, you must win through superior logistics.” This quote definitely is militaristic in nature, but it also shows the true nature of logistics: the details of getting a task done.
But much like in the broad strokes above of “progress somewhere, maintain their supply line, accomplish goals and then return is highly visible when it comes to warfare,” Tom Peter’s quote can easily be applied to the logistics of any business.
For instance, think of the supply line logistics of your local grocery store. Between vendors, employees, customers, opening hours, power bills, and water bills, a lot goes into making sure that bag of apples you just bought got there from the hundreds of miles from where it grew.
